Riding at Wingello while areas are being logged
Forest NSW is logging some of the areas adjacent to the Red Trail so these areas are closed. Forest NSW is allowing the James Williamson Enduro Challenge to ride these areas on the weekend of the race. However, a small section of the fire roads (including the KOM) are not accessible till race weekend).
You can still ride most of the trail. We rode it two days ago – see attached a map showing where you can ride to avoid the closed areas.

There are two options
1. Follow fire roads along Gulp Rd to the start of the Great Wall Single Track, and from this point, the track is all open
2. This is the second option (and what we did 2 days ago). From the Forest Camp, we rode the normal Red Trail route, turning left into the new single track running adjacent to Wildfire Gulley. At the end of the Single track, we joined the fire road, climbed up that climb (all normal Red Trail) but at the top, turn right and follow the fire road east and then south east to join up with Gulp Rd. there are signs along here showing you the way, indicating the Red Trail. Once onto Gulp Rd, you just follow the signs until you join up with the Great Wall single track.

Welcome to the second James Williamson Enduro Challenge, to be held on Sunday March 11th 2012.

Following the success of the inaugural event, the organisers were overwhelmed by riders’ positive comments and enthusiasm for this event. With this in mind, we are keeping the format of the race more or less the same as 2011, with a few minor changes to be introduced, to keep the trails flowing, and the riders pumped!

The James Williamson Enduro Challenge is a joint initiative of Southern Highlands Cycling Club (SHCC) and Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC), held each year in March, in memory of James Williamson, World and Australian Champion Enduro mountain biker. James passed away on March 23rd 2010 while participating in the Cape Epic Mountain Bike Race in South Africa. James came from the Southern Highlands of NSW before moving to Canberra, and knew the trails of both areas well. James was renowned for his capacity to challenge himself and for his passion for mountain biking; this race helps keep his spirit alive.

The James Williamson Enduro Challenge is a non-profit event, with all proceeds going to the James Williamson Fund. Proceeds will be used in a range of ways to develop young riders and promote the sport of mountain biking. http://jameswilliamson.com.au/fund

To mark the anniversary of Jimi’s passing and to celebrate his work as editor of Australia’s endurance racing magazine, the publisher’s of Enduro have put together a compilation of Jimi’s work.

Available in limited numbers in hardback the compilation comprises 148 pages of work that celebrates Jimi’s short but full life.

Jimi may have touched as many, if not more, people with his writing as he did with his riding. His articles are filled with excitement, passion and enthusiasm.

While Jimi may no longer be with us, his memory and his written words still inspire us.

We would like to thank everyone who has made the James Williamson Enduro Challenge possible.

Thanks go firstly to Leanne and John Henderson, from Canberra, who in the first few months after James died, made this event possible. Their energy and commitment carried us along at times when we felt deflated. It would not have happened without them

To Brendan Den and Chad Balding (from SHCC) whose experience in MTB racing and knowledge of Wingello trails got the race details going

To the expertise of Russ Baker who offered advice when we needed it and who provided all the technical expertise for timing and results

To Niki Fisher for our graphics

To Shaun Lewis, Dylan Cooper, and Ben Henderson for their help with planning

To our sponsors -  Giant, Jet Black, Shimano, PowerBar, Adidas Eyewear, State Forests, Enduro Magazine, Radical Lights, Mal-Adjusted, McGees Cycling Store, BongBong Cycles & Cycliste, DLA Philips Fox & PWC
